Mississippi Coding Academies Certify 2nd Cohort of Full-Stack Developers

The Mississippi Coding Academies launched in September 2017 and is transforming
lives of many Mississippians while helping to grow a high-tech workforce.

(JACKSON, MISS.) Instructors at the Jackson location of the Mississippi Coding Academies announced that they have certified 20 new entry-level software coders during an awards ceremony on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at the Greater Jackson Arts Council in downtown Jackson.

The certified coders spent nearly a year learning an intensive full-stack computer programming curriculum that teaches HTML/ CSS, JavaScript, SQL and React.

“With 20 new certified full stack coders, Jackson doubled the number of coders from the previous cohort. We are pleased that the graduates from both cohorts have been well received by employers,“ said Rich Sun, co-founder and director of the Jackson location.

“This is a really big step for our organization and certified coders. Starting with little to no real industry experience and getting employed as software developers after less than a year of training is a noteworthy achievement,” Said Ben Hubbard, director of development & outreach. “This is our second round of training and both our participation and overall completion rates improved. Our support from the community and businesses has been really strong and key to our growth.”

Throughout the 11-month training program, the coders engaged in hands-on projects, learning effective team-work and communication in addition to technical skills, and had the opportunity to present several projects and receive feedback from twenty-five different organizations from across Mississippi. Upon graduation, the 20 certified coders have either received jobs as junior developers with Mississippi companies, are currently engaged in the interviewing process, or been inspired to pursue further education.

If you know of someone hiring entry level programmers, please contact Javier Peraza at javier@mscoding.org. Registration for our next group of trainees is open now and we also recruiting for a new evening/weekend program: COMCAST Veterans Code which trains veterans in front-end software development. Both programs start in June.

The Mississippi Coding Academies, with locations in Jackson and Starkville, offer a no-cost, 11-month program to transform high school or college graduates into certified full-stack computer coders and web developers. In addition, COMCAST Veterans Code will be launching in late June.
